Higher vitamin B12 levels in neurodevelopmental disorders than in healthy controls and schizophrenia

2020

Recent studies suggest that both high and low levels of vitamin B12 (vitB12) may have negative health impacts. We measured VitB12 in patients with the Neurodevelopmental disorders (ND) (n = 222), comprised of Autism Spectrum Disorders, specific Developmental disorders, and Intellectual Disability (aged 2-53 years), schizophrenia (n = 401), and healthy controls (HC) (n = 483). Age-and gender-adjusted vitB12 z-scores were calculated by comparisons with a reference population (n = 76 148). We found higher vitB12 in ND (median 420 pmol/L, mean z-score: 0.30) than in HC (316 pmol/L, z-score: 0.06, P < .01) and schizophrenia (306 pmol/L, z-score: -0.02, P < .001), which was significant after adju…

Hematinic de?ciencies in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis : variations by gender and age

2017

Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between hematinic deficiencies and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). Material and Methods 517 RAS patients and 187 healthy controls were enrolled in the present study. Hematinic deficiencies, including serum ferritin, folic acid, and vitamin B12 deficiencies were assessed for each participant. Gender and age were taken into account and the collected data were statistically analysed. Results Compared with the healthy controls, a significantly higher overall frequency of hematinic deficiencies was found in RAS patients (p<0.001). When gender and age were taken into account, significant differences in hematinic deficiencies we…

Favoreggiamento dell’immigrazione irregolare vs. traffico di migranti: una dicotomia rilevante nell’interpretazione dell’art. 12 TUI? (Ragionando su …

2022

Human traffickers frequently take advantage of operative protocols that make them unpunishable pursuant the Italian Criminal Law because according to Art. 6 of the Italian Penal Code and International Convention on the High Sea jurisdictional powers cannot be exercised when the conduct is committed on the High Sea. So illustrating the territorial limitations of the efficacy of Criminal Law the research focuses on the hermeneutical solution given by the Court of Cassation that apparently with the intent of pursuing a more effectivity of the Criminal response recurred to the controversial category of the indirect offender in order to sanction smuggling conducts that enjoy the rescue intervention of the Italian authorities to reach their criminal aims. In turn in order to better identify the Italian jurisdiction in the crime of Art. 12 T.U. imm. I propose to correctly apply the concorso di persone (art. 110 c.p.) and the reato eventualmente permanente. The difficulties of a dogmatic framing together with the trend towards a universalistic validity of the jurisdictional powers when human rights are involved may recommend an interpretation of Art. 7 of the Italian Penal Code to cover a wider protection of human rights according to interpretive solutions of § 6 of the German Penal Code.Settore IUS/17 - Diritto Penale

I RODITORI DI CAVA MONTICINO (BRISIGHELLA, RA)

2021

Rodents are the most abundant group of small mammals occurring in Brisighella deposits. They are represented by 12 species in total, among which 2 hamsters (Apocricetus cf. barrierei and Ruscinomys cf. lasallei), 2 dormice (Muscardinus sp. and Myomimus sp.), 1 porcupine (Hystrix (Hystrix) depereti), 2 sciurids (Atlantoxerus cf. rhodius and Hylopetes sp.) and 5 species of muridae (Apodemus cf. gudrunae, Centralomys benericettii, Occitanomys sp, Paraethomys meini and Stephanomys debruijni). This association suggests a relatively dry open environment, interrupted by forest environment with more or less dense underground.

2022

The contribution introduces the topic covered by vol. 12 of AGATHÓN through essays, studies, research and projects on Innovability©® | Digital Transition to investigate the current widespread transformation that unites dichotomies (analogue and digital), enhances oxymorons (artificial intelligence), creates paradoxes (materiality of the intangible), while indiscriminately involving architecture, humanities and social sciences, anthropology, sociology, ecology, biology, physical-mathematical sciences and neurosciences, with impacts that – while already visible today and accelerated in part by the extraordinary global health emergency – will become even more evident in the medium and long ter…

Settore ICAR/12 - Tecnologia Dell'Architettura

Multiple sclerosis-like neurological manifestations in a coeliac patient: nothing is as it seems

2012

Cobalamin (vitamin B12) deficiency occurs with several disorders, involving different organs and systems, including blood, bowel, nervous system and eyes. Although the most important features are usually haematological ones, presence of neurological involvement, in the absence of blood count alterations, has just been described in the literature. Here we report the case of a 48-year-old man, suffering from coeliac disease for approximately 5 years, vegetarian, who was admitted to our department, referring dysaesthesia of the left lower limb, decreased libido and erectile dysfunction. Vitamin B12 deficiency was proved, even in the absence of blood count alteration, and treated with a vitamin…

The function of the soluble interleukin 6 (IL-6) receptor in vivo: sensitization of human soluble IL-6 receptor transgenic mice towards IL-6 and prol…

1996

Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is considered an important mediator of acute inflammatory responses. Moreover, IL-6 functions as a differentiation and growth factor of hematopoietic precursor cells, B cells, T cells, keratinocytes, neuronal cells, osteoclasts, and endothelial cells. IL-6 exhibits its action via a receptor complex consisting of a specific IL-6 receptor (IL-6R) and a signal transducing subunit (gp130). Soluble forms of both receptor components are generated by shedding and are found in patients with various diseases such as acquired immune deficiency syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. The function of the soluble (s)IL-6R in vivo is unknown. Since human (h)IL-6 acts on human and…

Bladder augmentation and urinary diversion in patients with neurogenic bladder: Non-surgical considerations

2011

Segments from almost all parts of the bowel have been used for urinary diversion. As a result, the available absorptive surface area of the bowel is reduced, and the incorporation of bowel segments into the urinary tract may have metabolic consequences. This is an area somewhat neglected in the literature. Metabolic complications are rare, but sub-clinical metabolic disturbances are quite common. Several studies have demonstrated that some of the absorbent and secreting properties of the bowel tissue are preserved after incorporation into the urinary tract. Hyperchloraemic metabolic acidosis can occur if ileal and/or colon segments are used, as well as malabsorption of vitamin B(12) and bil…
